Students explaining things to each other!

Students explaining things to each other!
It is comforting to see that what you have been telling students is well understood and they can in turn train or explain to their peers. In this picture, one student is explaining to his colleagues where to measure the diameter at breast height and why. we are at Boukoussiera Khaya population. In the background, a Fulani local helping with the data collection. I always have them come with us and explain things!

What do you think?

What do you think?
Again, students explaining things to each other. In this case, we were at the Penesoulou Khaya population and students were using the bark gauge to estimate bark thickness. This has not been done before in Benin and students are not used to using the tool. I explained to them why we are collecting the bark thickness and how the gauge works.

How to use a compass to establish your plot?

How to use a compass to establish your plot?
I was showing how to use a compass to make sure we have right angle plots in the Sakarou Khaya population. At the back, Yac was placing the tags on trees to mark the angles of the plot.

On the way to Penessoulou, Stop at Wari Maro

On the way to Penessoulou, Stop at Wari Maro
Here is my team! we were heading to Penessoulou and decided to make a stop at Wari Maro to pay a visit to a colleague Forester. Wari Maro is a village bordering the Wari Maro - Monts Kouffe Forest reserve. There is a new project (knowm as PAMF) working on the conservation of the forest (one of the biggest of the country) in a participatory way. Unfortunately, conservation projects in Benin are always using the "ecosystem approach" or "space conservation approach", with the ideas that if the forest is not cleared, the species will be conserved. And I do not totally agree with that view and suggest that we look at specific species facing heavy harvest and threatened with extinction. That might be combined with the 'ecosystem conservation approach"

Wari Maro - Monts Kouffe, High biodiversity

Wari Maro - Monts Kouffe, High biodiversity
This picture shows the Mont Soubakperou, one of the highest in the country and difficult to climb. This is in Wari Maro Village! Not only the Wari Maro - Mont Kouffe region has one of the highest monts, but also the region has one of the most diversed ecosystems. The forests are in the Sudano-Guinean region where species from the Sudanian region and those from the "Guinean" region are both found,..
