Do not touch everything in the forest

Do not touch everything in the forest
The time was running up and we got to find two more heavily harvested Khaya populations in the Northern Benin for my study. We spent that the first week up in the National Parks and the second week we came a little bit South in Wassa - Pehunco areas. Yac and I decided to run couple of transects along the main rivers around Tobre Village. We went to one of the gallery forest and found this beautifull plant with bright pods! I took this picture and we were arguing if it was a Mucuna sp or not. Yac as usual went to take a specimen of the plant. he touched the pods! aie aie, it was itching him all over. he got to jump into the river and take a quick bath. so do not touch everything in the forest,..!

hunting in the gallery

hunting in the gallery
after 7 Km transect in Tobre's gallery forest, we found few Khaya trees heavily harvested but the population was logged,.. no seedlings. we were taking a break, sitting on the bank of the river. something was moving we can feel it,.. but what was it? less than a minute later, we saw this guy, coming out from the bush, with his gun! scary! i asked him inbariba, his language, where he was going. he said he was hunting and confessed that he did not trust us. and that is why he was trying to guess if we want him something bad. but because i can speak the language, it made things easy for us!

training students for field work

training students for field work
i used students a lot during my research. there are many students from the agronomy department at the University of Parakou who are interested in conservation biology, forestry but who do not have experienced how it works on the field. i took some of them with me in the field. i trained them in setting plots, marking the plot, marking plants, taking all sort of measurements. in this picture, Bio, Uly, Liamidi are students, and Souley is our guide from Dogue village nearby. the students were marking trees with orange flaggings in a woodland savannah Khaya population in Dogue. one of them, Uly, was taking the bark thickness with the gauge.
