Training Students, W National Park

Training Students, W National Park
Marcellin Agbessi, BSc Student in Forestry (University of Abomey Calavi), was using a clinometer to measure the height of a Khaya senegalensis tree. We were surveyingKhaya senegalensis populations in the "W" National Park. It was difficult to get to the park,... about 90 Km far from the nearest city, Banikoara. The road was bad but the park is one of the rare places where we were able to find unharvested populations. When involving students I wish not only to train them about how to use tools and carry out ecological research, but also to give them the taste of doing research and getting interested in new research axis.

Mireille, student reseaching on medicinal plant

Mireille, student reseaching on medicinal plant
During my field work, I did not only work with or train students I came with, but i was also looking for other undergraduates, graduates or well established scientists doing their research in the same areas. I met Mireille in Pehunco. She is a BSc student doing her honors thesis on medicinal plants. We discussed about her research and I had share with her whatever new ideas that might work well: data collection strategies, different axis of analysis,.. or giving her a ride to the field when we are going in the same direction. We also talked about my research and I explained to her how matrix modelling works and what that can be usefull for. she became interested in it.

Collaborating with others to train students

Collaborating with others to train students
In Benin, many colleagues are also doing their PhD in Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium or France. We have good collaboration, peer-review each other projects, grant proposals or papers;.. help to promote undergraduate student research. I was with Honore Biaou, out in his field site to train undergraduate students from the University of Parakou. In this picture, Alfred Houngnon, a junior student interested in forestry is being quizzed;... trying to identify the name of shrub species. It is hard,.. even with his glasses on! It is a matter of practice. By the end of the training, Alfred was able to identify a number of savannah plant species.

Collaborating in Training, The Baobab

Collaborating in Training, The Baobab
With Achille Assogbadjo, a colleague PhD Student at Gent University (Belgium), we were training a belgian student about how to survey the Baobab (Adansonia digitata) in Boukoumbe region. The Baobab is a huge tree and you need a long pi-ribon or tape to measure the diameter at breast height.

Natta Armand and Biaou Honore

Natta Armand and Biaou Honore
Natta Armand is a forester;.. he received his PhD from Wagenigen University and worked on the ecology and phytosociology of gallery forest in Benin. I was lucky to have him join my team during the survey of the Khaya senegalensis and Khaya grandifoliola populations in Penesoulou Forest Reserve. He knows the forest very well and was so helpfull. On this picture, Dr Natta Armand (left) was discussing with Honore Biaou (right) about the indigenous people's uses of Morinda lucida. We were on our way to the forest.
